Hungary in context

Hungary's population peaked back in 1980, one of the earliest peaks in the world, and has been sliding ever since. The government has responded with some of the most generous pro-natalist policies anywhere, spending several percent of GDP on housing and tax breaks for families, which lifted fertility from its lows but not back to replacement. Emigration to Western Europe and steady ageing keep the long-term arrow pointing down.

The Hungary demographic outlook

With roughly 9.6 million people as of 2026, Hungary ranks 97th in the world by population. A country of Eastern Europe, its trajectory to 2100 is governed by how births, deaths and migration play out. Population density stands at about 106 people for every square kilometre of land.

Having topped out near 10.7 million around 1980, Hungary has entered the long, slow decline now spreading across much of the world. Its population is projected to fall to roughly 8.7 million by 2050 and about 7.5 million by 2100.

With fertility near 1.49, just under the 2.1 replacement mark, natural increase is fading. Net inward migration adds to the population each year and partly offsets the low birth rate.

Half of Hungary is currently younger than about 44, but by 2100 the median age is projected to reach around 47, while life expectancy, near 77 years, keeps rising. An older population gradually reshapes the labour force, pension systems and healthcare demand.

These figures follow the UN's medium variant, the most widely cited scenario. The low and high variants, driven mainly by differing fertility assumptions, fan out into a wide range by 2100, so treat each number as a central estimate rather than a precise forecast.

Migration & natural change

Net migration against natural change (births βˆ’ deaths), 2026

Hungary is a net destination for migration: roughly 12,936 more people arrive than leave each year. Deaths now outnumber births, subtracting about 45,357 people a year, so migration is what keeps the population from falling faster.

A total ratio of 100 means as many dependants as working-age adults. Rising old-age figures signal an ageing population and growing pressure on pensions and healthcare.
