Morocco Population

Morocco has moved further through its demographic transition than most of Africa, with fertility now down to around the replacement level and ageing beginning to appear. Emigration to Europe has long shaped its population, creating a large Moroccan diaspora and a steady flow of remittances. The country sits at an inflection point between its youthful past and an older future.

Morocco is the world's 41st most populous country, home to about 38.6 million people in 2026. Set in Northern Africa, its demographic path this century turns on the balance of births, deaths and migration. Population density stands at about 87 people for every square kilometre of land.

Morocco is projected to keep growing until about 2058, when its population peaks at roughly 43.7 million before a gradual decline sets in, leaving it near 38.0 million by 2100.

Half of Morocco is currently younger than about 30, but by 2100 the median age is projected to reach around 48, even as life expectancy improves from about 75 years. A rising median age means fewer working-age people supporting each retiree over time.

Fertility is around 2.21 births per woman, above the replacement level, which keeps natural growth positive for now. Emigration adds a further drag, as departures outnumber arrivals year to year.
