Kyrgyzstan retains notably higher fertility than most of the former Soviet world, and its population is projected to keep growing right through 2100. Like Tajikistan, it sends a large share of its workforce to Russia, and remittances form a major pillar of the economy. A young, growing population in a small mountainous economy makes labour migration a structural feature rather than a phase.

Kyrgyzstan is the world's 107th most populous country, home to about 7.3 million people in 2026. Set in Central Asia, its demographic path this century turns on the balance of births, deaths and migration. It packs in roughly 39 people per square kilometre.

Kyrgyzstan is projected to keep growing until about 2100, when its population peaks at roughly 11.7 million before a gradual decline sets in, leaving it near 11.7 million by 2100.

The median age is set to climb from about 25 today to roughly 41 by 2100, while life expectancy, near 72 years, keeps rising. A rising median age means fewer working-age people supporting each retiree over time.

At roughly 2.78 births per woman, fertility remains above replacement, though it has been trending down.

These figures follow the UN's medium variant, the most widely cited scenario. The low and high variants, driven mainly by differing fertility assumptions, fan out into a wide range by 2100, so treat each number as a central estimate rather than a precise forecast.
