World Population by Continent: How the Balance Shifts by 2100

Asia holds about 59% of humanity today and Africa about 19%. By 2100 the UN central projection has those two figures at roughly 45% and 37%. That convergence is the biggest redistribution of people this century.

The short answer

The world holds roughly 8.27 billion people in 2026, and the UN splits them into six regions. Asia has about 4.85 billion, Africa 1.57 billion, Europe 744 million, Latin America and the Caribbean 670 million, Northern America 389 million and Oceania 46.9 million. By 2100 the totals look very different. Asia is projected at about 4.62 billion, slightly smaller than today. Africa is projected at roughly 3.81 billion, about 2.4 times its current size. Europe falls to around 593 million. The world as a whole grows by about 1.92 billion over that stretch, which is less than Africa adds on its own. Africa is projected to gain roughly 2.24 billion, and the reason the world total rises by less is that three of the six regions are subtracting at the same time.

Only one region has already turned

Just one of the six is past its maximum: Europe, which the dataset puts at a peak of about 750 million in 2020. Everywhere else is still growing today. But the dates they stop are spread across the century. Latin America and the Caribbean crests around 2053, Asia around 2054, and three regions, Africa, Northern America, Oceania, are still rising when the projection horizon runs out in 2100.

Countries turn earlier than the regions that contain them, because a growing neighbour can mask a shrinking one for decades. In Europe, 30 of the 50 countries and territories in the dataset have already peaked. In Asia the figure is 8 of 51. In Africa it is 2 of 58.

Africa does almost all the adding

Africa held about 9% of the world in 1950, when Europe held roughly 22%. Africa passed Europe in size in 1996 and has not looked back. It is about 19% of humanity now, crosses a third of the world total around 2081, and finishes the century near 37%. We look at that shift on its own terms in our African century ranking.

The arithmetic behind it is fertility plus youth. The population-weighted average fertility rate across African countries is about 4.1 births per woman, against roughly 1.8 in Asia and 1.4 in Europe. The weighted average median age in Africa is near 20, about 23 years younger than Europe’s 43. A young population with above-replacement fertility keeps growing for a long time even as the rate falls, which is why Africa is still climbing steeply in 2100 while the regions that started their fertility decline earlier have levelled off or turned down. Asia stops being a majority

Asia is the quieter half of the story, and the more surprising one. Its share of humanity topped out at about 61% around 2002 and has been slipping ever since. It is roughly 59% today, and on this projection it falls below half of the world in 2075. Asia has held a majority of humanity in every year of this dataset, which begins in 1950, so that is a genuine first rather than a return to an older pattern.

That happens without any collapse. Asia adds people until about 2054, tops out near 5.29 billion, and is still projected to hold about 4.62 billion in 2100, only around 226 million below where it is now. Asia loses its majority because Africa grows, not because Asia empties out. The gap between the two regions narrows from about 3.1 times to roughly 1.2 times. Inside Asia the divergence is stark: India is projected to be the largest Asian country in 2100 at about 1.51 billion, while the region’s older economies shrink sharply, as we describe in Japan, China, South Korea.

The ranking of the continents changes once

In 1950 the order by size ran Asia, Europe, Africa, Northern America, Latin America & the Caribbean, Oceania. Today it runs Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, Northern America, Oceania. By 2100 it runs Asia, Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, Europe, Northern America, Oceania. Only one swap is left in the projection: Latin America and the Caribbean is projected to pass Europe for third place around 2042. Both regions are shrinking by then, so this is a race between two declines rather than a rise. Births are the leading indicator

Population totals are slow and forgiving. Births are not, and they turn first. Africa already accounts for about 36% of the babies born worldwide in 2026, well ahead of its 19% share of people. By 2100 it is projected to account for roughly 48%. The crossing point is 2055: from that year on, more children are born in Africa than in Asia, despite Asia still holding far more people.

The other side is the year deaths overtake births. Europe crossed in 1993 and has run a natural deficit ever since, currently about 2.4 million more deaths than births a year. Northern America is projected to cross in 2040, and Asia in 2055, the same year Africa starts out-birthing it. After the crossover a region can only grow through migration, and on these projections exactly one manages it: Northern America. It is projected to run a cumulative natural deficit of about 28.5 million between now and 2100 and still end up roughly 86.0 million larger, because net migration adds around 115 million. Europe takes in a large inflow too, about 74.9 million, but set against a natural deficit of 226 million it only slows the decline rather than reversing it.

Everywhere gets older, at different speeds

Aging is the one trend all six regions share, but not at one speed. The population-weighted median age in Asia goes from about 32 today to roughly 42 by 2050, a jump of 10 years. Europe, already the oldest region at about 43, moves by only 4 over the same period, because it made most of that transition earlier. Africa ages too, from about 20 to 25, and it is still the youngest region in 2100 on this projection, which is precisely why it keeps growing. What would change this

Two caveats matter. The first is definitional: these are UN statistical regions, not the continents of a school atlas. The Americas are split into two, Northern America counts only five entries, and a country like Russia is counted wholly in Europe rather than split across two regions. Comparisons hold as long as you use the same boundaries throughout, which is what we do here.

The second is that the further out a projection runs, the more it depends on fertility assumptions that have repeatedly moved. Africa’s 2100 figure is the most sensitive number on this page, because it compounds across three generations that are not yet born. Faster fertility decline in Africa would lower the world total and mute the redistribution; a slower decline would sharpen it. The direction of travel, Africa up and most of the rest flat or down, is far more robust than any of the exact totals here.
