World Population in 2050: What the Projections Say
The central UN projection puts world population at about 9.64 billion in 2050, roughly 1.38 billion more than today. The headline is a bigger world. The story underneath it is a slower, older and very differently distributed one.

The short answer
On 1 January 2050 the world is projected to hold about 9.64 billion people. It holds roughly 8.27 billion today, so the next 24 years add around 1.38 billion. You can watch the current total move on our live world population counter, which interpolates the same series this article reads.
That gain sounds enormous, and it is. It is also markedly smaller than the one just behind us: the previous 24 years added about 1.97 billion. Annual growth is roughly 0.83% in 2026 and is projected to be about 0.42% in 2050, which is the difference between a population that is visibly expanding and one that is coasting. The 9 billion mark arrives around 2038, a milestone we track on its own page. Notice the spacing: 8 billion to 9 billion takes about 15 years, while 9 billion to 10 billion is projected to take 23 years. The billions keep coming, just further apart.
Births hold steady. Deaths do the work.
Here is the part that surprises most people. The slowdown between now and 2050 is not mainly caused by a collapse in births. The UN projects about 132,503,469 births worldwide in 2026 and about 132,555,180 in 2050, a difference of well under one percent. Global births drift up slightly in the 2030s and back down again, staying inside a narrow band.
Deaths are what change. They run at roughly 63,637,314 a year now and rise to about 91,876,624 by 2050, an increase of around 44%. This is not a health crisis; it is arithmetic. The very large cohorts born in the middle and later twentieth century are reaching the ages at which people die, and there are simply more of them than there were. Net growth therefore falls from about 68,866,155 people a year, one more person every 0.5 sec, to roughly 40,678,556 a year, or one every 0.8 sec. Same babies, more funerals, slower growth.
Where the extra people live
The world total is the least interesting number here, because almost none of the growth is evenly spread. Between now and 2050, Africa alone accounts for about 64% of the net gain, adding roughly 881 million people. Asia adds about 429 million, another 31%. Together those two regions supply essentially all of it. Europe moves the other way, shrinking by about 39.9 million over the same period.

Put as shares, Africa rises from about 19% of humanity to roughly 25% in a single generation, while Asia slips from 59% to about 55% despite still growing in absolute terms. The top ten in 2050
Rankings are stickier than people expect: 9 of today’s ten largest countries are still in the top ten in 2050. The order inside the list, though, changes quite a lot:

- 9. DR Congo: 216 million (today’s rank: 15)
- 10. Bangladesh: 214 million (today’s rank: 8)
Exactly one swap happens at the bottom of the list: DR Congo climbs from 15th today into the top ten, and Russia drops out. Above the swap, the reshuffling is just as telling: India adds more people than any other country, about 207 million, while several countries that feel permanently large today slide several places without losing a single person, simply because others grew faster.
Growth and decline, at the same time
A single global figure hides the fact that the world of 2050 contains two demographic regimes at once. Of the 237 countries and territories in this dataset, 74 are projected to hold fewer people in 2050 than they do today. Those countries are home to roughly 28% of the world’s population right now, so this is not a fringe phenomenon. Widen the lens from headcount to direction of travel and it is broader still: 98 of the 237 will have passed their all-time population peak by 2050 and started down the other side, whether or not the fall has yet erased their gains since today.
The largest single decline belongs to China, projected to fall by about 149 million between now and 2050, more than the entire current population of most countries on Earth. It is not alone: the same pattern of very low fertility and rapid aging runs through its neighbors, which we cover in Inside East Asia’s population decline. Europe, Japan, Korea and increasingly parts of Latin America are on the same path, separated mainly by how far along it they are.
Older, not just bigger
If you had to pick the one thing that will feel different about 2050, it would not be crowding. It would be age. Population totals move slowly, but age structures move fast, because they are set by births that already happened. In this dataset 228 of the 237 countries and territories with median age projections have an older median age in 2050 than today, and that includes the places still growing fastest.
India is the clearest illustration. It is the country that adds the most people between now and 2050, and its median age still climbs from about 28 today to roughly 38 by then, an entire decade of aging in a single generation. Nigeria, one of the youngest large populations anywhere, goes from about 18 to 24 while growing rapidly. At the far end, China moves from around 40 to about 52, which would make the median Chinese citizen in 2050 older than the median Japanese citizen is today. Growth and aging are not opposites; almost everywhere, they happen at once.
This is why 2050 is a useful horizon rather than an arbitrary round year. Everyone who will be 25 or older in 2050 has already been born, which anchors most of the age structure in facts rather than assumptions.
How much of this should you believe?
More than you might think, with one honest caveat. The UN publishes low and high fertility variants alongside the medium path, roughly half a child either side. For 2050 they run from about 8.94 billion to 10.36 billion, a spread of 1.42 billion. That band is about as wide as the entire projected gain, which is a useful reminder that 9.64 billion is a central estimate rather than a forecast.
But notice what the range does not do. Even the low variant, which assumes fertility roughly half a child below the central path everywhere, still leaves the world bigger in 2050 than it is today, at about 8.94 billion. Over this particular horizon the open question is how much bigger, not whether, because most of the people who will be alive are already here.
