When Will the World Reach 9 Billion?
Around 2037, about 11 years from now, on the UN central projection. That makes it a slower billion than any of the five before it, and on the low fertility scenario it is a milestone the world never reaches at all.

The short answer
World population stands at roughly 8.27 billion in 2026. The UN medium projection has it at about 8.98 billion on the first day of 2037, which is the first New Year the running count sits above nine billion. The date is worth stating carefully, because a threshold like this is a modelled crossing rather than an observed event. Nobody counts the world one person at a time. What the projection actually says is that on this set of assumptions, the total passes nine billion at some point in the twelve months before that New Year, with an uncertainty of several years in either direction. The interesting part is not the date. It is how differently this billion behaves from the last few.
Each billion now takes longer than the last
For nearly half a century the billions arrived like clockwork. The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth billionth people arrived at intervals of 12 years, four times in a row. The step now under way, from 2022 to 2037, takes about 15 years. The one after it, to ten billion around 2060, takes roughly 23 years. There is no step after that: the medium projection never reaches eleven billion, because world population is expected to level off near 10.29 billion across the 2080s and then decline, a turning point we cover in When will world population peak?
The slowdown is easiest to see as a rate. World population grew by 2.3% in 1963, the fastest year in this dataset. It is growing at about 0.83% in 2026, and the projection has that down to roughly 0.65% by the time the nine billion mark arrives. The absolute additions are falling too, and have been for a while: the largest one-year increase in this dataset was about 93.7 million in 1990, against 68.9 million this year and 58.9 million in 2037. Each billion is being added by a slower engine than the one that added the billion before.
Where the ninth billion comes from
It is not the world growing evenly. Between 2026 and 2037, the countries and territories that gain people add about 795 million between them, while the 69 that lose people give back roughly 86.0 million. The 709 million net figure is what is left after those two are set against each other. 168 entries grow and 69 shrink, which is already a much more even split than the phrase “world population growth” suggests.
By region, Africa supplies about 398 million of the net gain, or roughly 56% of it, and Asia about 264 million, roughly 37%. Europe is smaller in 2037 than in 2026. The longer arc of that shift, and what it does to the size rankings, is the subject of The African century.
The country list is more concentrated still. The five largest contributors supply about 44% of the net gain and the ten largest about 58%. Ranked by people added over these 11 years they run India, Nigeria, Pakistan, DR Congo and Ethiopia. India alone accounts for roughly 17% of the ninth billion, more than any other country.
Most of it is momentum, not high birth rates
The most common misreading of a milestone like this is that the world is still having lots of children. It is not, by historical standards. 131 of the 237 countries and territories in the dataset already had fertility below 2.1 births per woman in 2024, the level at which a generation just replaces itself, and those countries hold about 67% of everyone alive today. That group is not sitting out the growth either: the growing members of it contribute about 218 million between now and 2037, roughly 31% of the net gain.
This is demographic momentum. When a country has had large generations recently, those people move into adulthood and have children of their own, and the total keeps rising for decades even after family sizes fall. India is the clearest case: fertility there is already about 1.96 births per woman, below replacement, and the projection still has the country growing until around 2062. Underneath the total, the two flows behave very differently. Between 2026 and 2037 the projection counts roughly 1.47 billion births against about 760 million deaths. Births are close to flat over this stretch and are expected to top out around 2041. Deaths climb steadily, not because the world becomes less healthy but because there are far more old people in it than there used to be. Growth continues while the first number stays ahead of the second, currently a net gain of one person every 0.5 sec, and it ends when they cross.
How firm is the date?
Firmer than the 2100 numbers, and less firm than it looks. Almost everyone who will be an adult in 2037 has already been born, so the near-term arithmetic is mostly observation rather than assumption. What can move the date is fertility over the next decade and, to a lesser extent, mortality.
The UN publishes scenarios for exactly this reason. On its high fertility path the world passes nine billion around 2035, 2 years earlier. On the low path, it does not pass nine billion at all this century: the total tops out near 8.95 billion around 2053 and turns down before reaching the mark. That is a striking spread for a milestone barely more than a decade out, and it is the honest answer to how much confidence any single year deserves. It is also worth noting which way recent history has run: fertility has generally fallen faster than demographers projected, and a faster fertility decline pushes an upward milestone like this one later while pulling the eventual peak lower.
What the milestone actually means
Not much on its own. Nine billion is a base-ten coincidence, and nothing changes on the day the counter turns over. What matters is the shape of the curve it sits on, and that shape is now clearly bending. The world is moving from an era in which the question was how fast the population grows into one in which the question is how it ages, where the working-age people are, and which countries are shrinking.
