Is World Population Decreasing?

No, not yet. World population is still going up, and on the UN’s central projection it keeps going up for another sixty years. What is decreasing is the rate of growth, and the number of countries where the population is still rising at all.

The short answer

In 2026 the world holds about 8.27 billion people and will end the year holding around 8.34 billion, a net gain of roughly 68,866,155. That works out to one more person every 0.5 sec, and you can watch the count move on our live world population counter. So no, the global total is not decreasing. It is still adding on the order of 69 million people a year, more than the entire current population of most countries on Earth.

What is decreasing, sharply, is the pace. Global population growth peaked at about 2.28% per year back in 1963, was down to 1.35% by 2000, and stands at roughly 0.83% in 2026. On the UN’s central projection it keeps sliding smoothly through about 0.42% in 2050 and 0.09% in 2075, and finally turns negative around 2084. Why the question feels obvious

The reason so many people expect the answer to be yes is that they are reading the news accurately. Country after country really is shrinking. In this dataset, 63 countries and territories have already passed their all-time population maximum and are now on the way down. Together they account for roughly 27% of everyone alive today, so this is not a fringe pattern. Japan peaked around 2010. China peaked in 2021, having spent decades as the country most associated with population growth. Italy, Germany, Poland and much of Eastern Europe are all past their maxima; our peaked ranking lists them, and our shrinking ranking orders the fastest decliners.

Zoom in on the East Asian giants and the picture looks like collapse. Japan, China and South Korea together are projected to lose hundreds of millions of people this century on the medium path. Anyone reading their headlines could be forgiven for concluding that the world is doing the same thing.

Why the world total is still growing

A global total is an aggregation, and aggregations hide direction. The 63 shrinking countries are being outweighed, in the sum, by the roughly 174 that are still growing. That is where most of humanity currently lives: in places that have not yet peaked.

The remaining growth is concentrated by geography. Africa is projected to more than double from about 1.57 billion today to 3.81 billion by 2100, and is still rising at the end of the projection horizon rather than having peaked and turned down. Most of Asia is still growing too, driven by India, Pakistan and the Philippines; the region as a whole is projected to peak around 2054 before turning down. Europe moves the other way, having peaked back around 2020 and sliding toward roughly 593 million by 2100. Our continents page shows each of those trajectories on the same chart.

Momentum: why decline is delayed

The other thing that keeps the total climbing is demographic momentum. Even after a country’s fertility rate drops below the replacement level of about 2.1 births per woman, its population usually keeps growing for a generation or more, because the parents-to-be are already alive in unusually large numbers and people are living longer. Fertility is now below replacement in countries that hold about 67% of the world’s population, India, Brazil and the United States among them, but the extra grandparents alive today and the young adults still moving into their childbearing years hold the total up.

You can see the mechanic in the raw numbers. Global births are running at roughly 132,503,469 a year in 2026, and deaths at roughly 63,637,314. The gap between them is the net gain, and it is still tens of millions of people. That gap narrows as very large cohorts age into the years when people die, but it takes decades to close, which is why growth keeps trailing along even after fertility has been low for a long time.

What decrease will actually look like

When the global total does start to fall, the decline will not look like a cliff. On the medium path the year after the peak takes only a whisker off the total, and a decade after peak the world is still within one percent of the maximum. By 2100 the projection is about 10.19 billion, only around 103 million below the peak value. In percentage terms, that is a smaller move than the growth of a single decade in the twentieth century. The shape of the decline resembles the shape of the growth curve turned upside down: slow at first, and modest in scale compared with the rise that came before.

The number to notice, once you accept that the total is not shrinking yet, is not the peak value but the spacing of the milestones on the way up. The world crossed 8 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach 9 billion around 2038, then 10 billion around 2061. Notice the intervals widen: 8 to 9 billion takes about 15 years, 9 to 10 billion takes about 23. Each billion after that arrives more slowly, until the eleventh billion simply never lands.

How certain is any of this?

The direction is near certain. The exact numbers are less so. Fertility sixty years from now is the biggest lever, and the UN handles that by publishing scenarios. Even on the low fertility path, which shaves roughly half a child off the medium assumption everywhere, world population still keeps rising from today for the next few decades, cresting at about 8.95 billion around 2053 before turning down. On the high fertility path it never crests inside the projection horizon at all, reaching 14.35 billion by 2100 and still climbing. Both bookends agree that the total is not falling today. In every recent revision of the projections, actual fertility has come in below the previous estimate, which is why the projected peak year has been drifting earlier and the peak value lower with each release. So 2084 is best read as a central estimate that may still nudge closer.

What none of the plausible paths show, over the next few decades, is a world total that starts falling this year, this decade or even this generation. The demographic story of 2026 is that growth is slowing quickly, that a growing minority of countries are already shrinking, and that the two together will one day tip the global sum into decline, without being anywhere near it yet.
