Togo Population

Togo is a small West African country on a steep growth path, with fertility above four children per woman and a median age under 20. Its population is projected to well more than double by 2100, much of that growth concentrating in and around Lome and the coastal corridor. Like its neighbours, its central question is whether schooling and employment can keep pace with so many young people.

Togo is home to about 9.8 million people in 2026, the 96th largest population of any country. In Western Africa, where it lies, that future is driven by fertility, longevity and the movement of people across its borders. It packs in roughly 183 people per square kilometre.

Growth continues for Togo until around 2100, the year its population is set to crest at about 26.2 million. From there a slow fall takes it to roughly 26.2 million by century's end.

The median age is set to climb from about 19 today to roughly 32 by 2100, even as life expectancy improves from about 63 years. For now it remains one of the world's youngest populations, with a large generation about to reach working age. An older population gradually reshapes the labour force, pension systems and healthcare demand.

With about 4.12 births per woman, Togo still has one of the higher fertility rates in the world, driving fast expansion. Emigration adds a further drag, as departures outnumber arrivals year to year.
