Europe’s Quiet Population Decline
Europe passed its population peak around 2020 and has been shrinking ever since, without a headline, a crisis or a single dramatic year. Of the six major world regions, it is the only one already on the far side of that turn.

The turn has already happened
Europe holds about 744 million people in 2026. That is below its high point of roughly 750 million, reached around 2020, and every year in this projection from now to the end of the century is smaller than the one before it. By 2100 the medium variant puts the region near 593 million, a fall of about 20% from today and roughly 151 million fewer people. That would take Europe back to about the size it was in 1959.
Of the six regions in this dataset, Europe is the only one already past its maximum. The next to turn is Latin America & the Caribbean, around 2053. The world as a whole is not projected to peak until around 2084, which is the subject of when will world population peak. Europe is roughly 64 years ahead of that schedule.
The word that matters is quiet. An annual loss of about 0.14% is invisible from inside a country. Nothing empties, nothing closes overnight. The change shows up in school rolls, in the average age of a town, in which regions have to merge their municipalities, long before it shows up in a number anyone argues about.
Deaths passed births a generation ago
The engine underneath is simple arithmetic. In 2026 Europe records roughly 6.1 million births against about 8.5 million deaths, a shortfall of some 2.4 million people in a single year. There are about 1.38 deaths for every birth today, and the projection has that at 1.55 by 2050.
This is not new. Deaths first outnumbered births across the region in 1993, more than 30 years ago, and they have not stopped since. Births peaked in 1959 at about 12.2 million and are now running near 50% of that figure. 35 of the 50 European countries and territories in this dataset already record more deaths than births each year.
30 peaks behind, 20 ahead
Country by country, the pattern is further along than the regional total suggests. 30 of the 50 European entries in this dataset have already passed their own maximum, and those countries hold about 72% of everyone living in Europe today. On that count 60% of European countries are past their peak, against about 30% in Oceania, the next highest of the dataset’s major regions. The peaks cluster. Hungary turned first, around 1980. Another 12 turned during the 1990s alone, concentrated in the east, where the end of the Soviet era brought a collapse in birth rates and a wave of emigration at the same time. A further 10 have turned since 2020, including Germany around 2024 and Poland around 2023. Italy went earlier still, around 2014.
East and south are falling fastest
Averaging Europe hides most of what is happening to it. Grouped by sub-region, Southern Europe loses about 36% of its population between 2026 and 2100, with 13 of its 17 entries already past a peak. Eastern Europe is close behind at about 29%, where every one of its 10 entries has already peaked. Northern Europe, at the other end, ends the century within 0.7% of its current size. That is a gap wide enough that the two ends of the continent are living in different demographic centuries.
In absolute terms the largest projected losses to 2100 are Ukraine (about 24.4 million), Italy (about 23.5 million), Poland (about 18.5 million) and Russia (about 17.1 million). Ukraine is the steepest of them in percentage terms, though its figures reflect wartime disruption and displacement and should be read with that in mind. Only three European countries are projected to hold more people in 2100 than today by any substantial margin: United Kingdom, France and Sweden. The shrinking countries ranking puts these alongside the rest of the world.
Migration is doing the load-bearing work
20 European entries are still growing this year, and the reason is arrivals rather than births. In every single one of them, net migration contributes more people this year than natural change does. 7 have already tipped past the point where that is a matter of degree: they record more deaths than births, so migration is the only reason they are growing at all. Across the region, net migration adds roughly 1.3 million people in 2026 against a natural shortfall of about 2.4 million, so it offsets a little over half of the gap and no more.
Over the rest of the century the same two flows run at very different scales: a cumulative natural loss of roughly 226 million against net migration of about 74.9 million. Migration on the scale the projection already assumes slows the decline by a wide margin and does not stop it. United Kingdom and France, the two largest countries still projected to grow, are the clearest illustration: both are assumed to keep receiving people, and both peak later this century anyway, around 2073 and 2096.
The sharper edge is age, not headcount
A population can shrink slowly and still change quickly, because the losses are not spread evenly across ages. Weighted by population, the average median age across European countries is about 43.1 in 2026, against roughly 28.2 in 1950, and the projection has it near 46.4 by 2050. Italy is already at about 47.8, the oldest of Europe’s larger countries in this dataset, and is projected to reach about 52.9 by 2050.
Fertility explains why there is no quick way back. The population-weighted average across the region sits near 1.42 births per woman in 2024, well under the 2.1 needed for a generation to replace itself, and the projection still has it only around 1.50 by 2050. Only two European entries are at or above replacement, and they are among the smallest in the region. Ukraine records the lowest rate of any larger European country, at about 0.99. When each cohort of potential parents is smaller than the last, even a recovery in birth rates produces few extra births for decades.
A smaller share of a larger world
The relative change is starker than the absolute one. Europe held about 22% of the world’s people in 1950. It holds roughly 9% today, and the projection puts it near 5.8% in 2100, while the world total keeps rising for most of that period. Europe is not emptying so much as being outgrown, a shift traced across all six regions in world population by continent.
None of this makes Europe unusual any more. East Asia is running the same course faster and from lower fertility, and the projection has most of the world following within a few decades. What distinguishes Europe is how long it has been doing this, and how little drama it has involved. A region can lose 21% of its population across the 80 years after its peak while every individual year looks ordinary.
