Honduras Population

Honduras sits in the middle of Central America's demographic transition, with fertility falling toward replacement but a population still young enough to keep growing until late this century. Emigration is the dominant fact of its recent history, driven by violence and scarce work, and the remittances sent home have grown to roughly a quarter of the economy. Whether that outflow slows will do much to decide where its numbers settle.

Honduras is home to about 11.1 million people in 2026, the 87th largest population of any country. A country of Central America, its trajectory to 2100 is governed by how births, deaths and migration play out. Population density stands at about 103 people for every square kilometre of land.

Growth continues for Honduras until around 2090, the year its population is set to crest at about 17.1 million. From there a slow fall takes it to roughly 17.0 million by century's end.

Half of Honduras is currently younger than about 24, but by 2100 the median age is projected to reach around 44, even as life expectancy improves from about 73 years. An older population gradually reshapes the labour force, pension systems and healthcare demand.

Fertility is around 2.48 births per woman, above the replacement level, which keeps natural growth positive for now.

All of this is a projection, not a prediction. The further out it runs the wider the plausible range becomes, which is why Honduras's charts show a low-to-high band around the central line.
